Monitoring Application Insights

Your teams need the telemetry in Azure Application Insights, but giving everyone Azure Portal access and Kusto skills is neither safe nor practical. Monitor your Application Insights instances with Nodinite to detect access problems, automate discovery, and let your team run curated Kusto queries before problems impact your business, all without direct Azure Portal access.

  • ✅ Detect and receive alerts on issues in Application Insights instantly
  • ✅ Automate discovery and monitoring of all Application Insights instances
  • ✅ Empower your team with secure, role-based access
  • ✅ Take action with Remote Actions, such as Execute Query, and proactive alerts through Alarm Plugins

Nodinite presents each Application Insights instance as a self-monitored Resource in your Monitor Views.

This page explains how Nodinite monitors Application Insights from one or more role-based Monitor Views. Nodinite tracks the state of Application Insights configurations and lets you manage monitoring thresholds. You can use remote commands as Actions to swiftly resolve issues. The Managing Application Insights page details the Remote Actions. Application Insights also powers Azure Functions monitoring.

How Monitoring Works

The Azure Agent discovers each Application Insights instance, checks that it can read its data, and reports the state to the Monitoring Service. Users with access to a Monitor View see the state and run the curated Kusto queries as a Remote Action.

Monitoring Features

  • State Evaluation – Assess Application Insights health instantly based on policy.

If Nodinite cannot check your Application Insights state, no one else can use them either.

  • Automatic Discovery – The Nodinite Azure Agent uses the Azure Rest API to automatically present Application Insights instances.
  • Category-based Monitoring – Group monitored Resources by Nodinite Categories.
  • Role-based Access – Share access to individual items using Monitor Views.

State Evaluation for Application Insights

Nodinite presents each Application Insights instance as a Resource. For example, if you have three Application Insights instances, you see three Resources in Nodinite.

  • The Nodinite Resources name matches the deployed Application Insights instance name.
  • Monitored Application Insights instances belong to the 'Application Insights' Category.

Many other Azure-related Categories exist. Review the Azure Logging and Monitoring Overview.

  • The Application name uses the pattern: Subscription name/Resource Group Name.

Each item (shown as a Resource) receives a state (OK, Warning, Error, Unavailable) based on evaluation.

You can override the evaluation process by configuring the Expected State option for any Nodinite Resource.

Application Insights

For Application Insights Resources, Nodinite evaluates state as follows:

State Status Description Actions
🚫 Unavailable Resource not available
  • Nodinite cannot evaluate the 'Application Insights' due to network or security issues
Review Prerequisites and the firewall settings
❌ Error Error threshold breached N/A
⚠️ Warning Warning threshold breached Azure App Registration delegated permissions (Data.Read) not configured Review Azure user rights
✅ OK Within user-defined thresholds Details

Analyze the alert history for your Application Insights with Nodinite. During root cause analysis, you can search for historical state changes for any time span, either for all Application Insights or individually, if your Monitor View allows it.
