Installing the Nodinite IBM MQ Monitoring Agent

IBM MQ Monitoring Agent v7.0.4 and later should be installed using the Nodinite Portal-based scripted installation. This modern approach provides automated installation and configuration with minimal manual intervention.

  1. Register your environment in the Nodinite Portal
  2. Select IBM MQ Agent in the Agents configuration tab
  3. Configure agent settings (port, service account, queue manager connections)
  4. Download the installation package with embedded PowerShell scripts

Warning

Deprecated: The MSI-based installation method is legacy and intended only for remote server installations where the Portal-based approach cannot be used. This method is not recommended for new deployments and will be retired in future versions.

Important

Version 7.0.4+ Users: If you are installing IBM MQ Monitoring Agent v7.0.4 or later, use the Portal-based installation method instead. The MSI approach below is for legacy v6 installations or remote servers only.

When to Use MSI Installation

Use this method only if:

  • You are installing on a remote server that cannot be managed via Portal scripts
  • You are maintaining a legacy v6 environment (upgrade to v7 recommended)
  • You have specific infrastructure constraints preventing automated installation

MSI Installation Prerequisites

Follow these steps to install the Nodinite IBM MQ Monitoring Agent using the legacy MSI-based approach.

Note

You must be a local administrator to install Windows Services.

Before you begin

Make sure you meet all prerequisites for IBM MQ Monitoring Agent before proceeding.

Step 1: Start the installer

From the server where you want to install the IBM MQ Monitoring Agent, use RDP and double-click the MSI file to launch the installation.

Step 2: Welcome Screen

When the MSI file runs, you'll see the Welcome screen.

Click 'Next' to continue or 'Cancel' to exit the installer.

Step 3: Custom Setup

Select features and the installation location. Default settings are recommended for most users.

Step 4: Service Account Information

Enter credentials for the Account that will run the IBM MQ Monitoring Agent as a Windows Service. You will set specific user rights per queue manager later during Configuration.

  • Account (Domain\User)
    • Domain: Enter the domain name or use the server name/dot (.) for a local account
    • User: Enter the account name
  • Password: Enter the password for the account.

Note

The account must have 'Log on as Service Right'. Review Prerequisites for details.

Click 'Next' to continue or 'Cancel' to exit.

Files in use

If the Monitoring Agent is already installed and you are performing an Update, you may see a dialog about files in use. Select 'Close the applications and attempt to restart them' and click 'Ok'.

Depending on current load and threads in use, the operation may take anywhere from 0-30 seconds to complete

Insufficient Privileges

If the account information does not meet the Prerequisites for the IBM MQ Monitoring Agent, you will see an error message.

The most common reasons are that the account is not allowed to run as a service or is not a local Administrator. Follow the How to set Logon as a Service right guide and click retry. If the problem persists, click cancel and restart. Make sure to enter valid credentials!

Tip

Check the local event log for errors (both System and Application).

Step 6: Completed setup

The final step shows either a success or a premature exit.

Click Finish to exit the installer.

When setup completes successfully, your default text editor will open a file named 'README.txt'. This file contains additional information needed to add the agent as a Monitoring Agent. The file is [re]generated on each successful start.
